Artist of the Month: Abdel Wahab Abdel Mohsen

Abdel Wahab Abdel Mohsen is one of Egypt’s most distinctive contemporary visual artists. Born in 1951 in Desouk, Kafr El-Sheikh, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at جامعة الإسكندرية in 1976 and went on to become a leading figure in shaping the modern Egyptian art scene.

His artistic language is poetic and deeply rooted in place. Rather than relying on direct representation, Abdel Mohsen builds layered abstract compositions inspired by the Egyptian landscape, the Nile, the desert, folk rituals, and ancient symbolism. His works are meditative—where soft color fields and structured geometric forms coexist in quiet dialogue.

He has a distinctive way of treating the canvas as a living space, using silence, texture, and earthy tones to evoke both spiritual depth and visual harmony. His art balances the weight of memory with the openness of abstraction, giving viewers room to feel rather than simply observe.

Beyond his studio practice, Abdel Mohsen founded the “Abdel Wahab Abdel Mohsen House for Culture and Arts” in his hometown, creating a cultural hub that connects local and international artists through residencies, exhibitions, and workshops.

His latest solo exhibition, “Sycamore Lady”, was held at Gallery Cordoba, marking another chapter in his ongoing journey of artistic reflection and innovation.
